My son, Max, had always been a handful. At ten years old, he had become demanding and entitled, expecting everything to be handed to him without lifting a finger. My husband and I had tried different approaches to discipline, but nothing seemed to stick. When my mother-in-law offered to take Max for the weekend, I was skeptical. She had a reputation for spoiling him even more than we did, and I worried it would only make things worse. But I needed a break, so I reluctantly agreed.
When Max returned Sunday evening, I barely recognized him. Instead of complaining about the trip or asking what was for dinner, he greeted me with a smile and immediately offered to help set the table. I was taken aback but didn’t say anything, figuring it was a temporary change. Over the next few days, his behavior continued to astonish me. He started doing his homework without being asked, thanked me for making meals, and even volunteered to clean up after dinner. It was as if a completely different child had come home.
Curious about what had caused this transformation, I called my mother-in-law to ask what had happened during their weekend together. She laughed and explained that she had put Max to work on her small farm. From feeding chickens to helping weed the garden, Max had spent the weekend learning the value of hard work and responsibility. She hadn’t spoiled him at all; instead, she had given him a taste of what it meant to contribute and see the results of his efforts. “He was exhausted by the end of each day,” she said, “but you should have seen how proud he was when he collected the eggs or finished a chore.”
Hearing this, I felt both grateful and a little embarrassed. My mother-in-law had succeeded where my husband and I had failed, showing Max the importance of gratitude and effort. Over time, his newfound attitude became a lasting change, and our household was much happier for it.
