My Husband and MIL Absolutely Ruined My Birthing Experience – Is My Revenge Justified?

The birth of my first child was supposed to be a joyous and empowering moment, but my husband and mother-in-law turned it into a nightmare I’ll never forget. From the start, my MIL insisted on being present during the birth, claiming it was a “family tradition.” I was uncomfortable with the idea, but my husband convinced me to agree, saying it would mean the world to her. When the day finally came, her overbearing presence and constant comments made everything worse. She criticized the hospital staff, insisted on holding my hand even though I wanted my husband, and even tried to dictate how I should breathe during contractions.

My husband wasn’t any better. Instead of standing by my side, he spent most of the time chatting with his mother or scrolling through his phone. When I begged him to focus on me, he brushed me off, saying I was “just stressed” and should “stop being so dramatic.” At one point, I overheard them laughing about how “emotional” I was being, as if my pain and frustration were some kind of joke. The final straw came when my MIL tried to take pictures during a moment I explicitly said I wanted privacy, completely ignoring my wishes.

After the ordeal, I couldn’t shake the resentment building inside me. My husband and MIL acted like nothing had happened, even boasting to family and friends about how “special” the birth was for them. Meanwhile, I felt robbed of what should have been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. That’s when I decided to take matters into my own hands. I shared my story, unfiltered, with our family group chat—every detail of how they ignored my wishes and made the experience about themselves. The backlash was immediate, and both my husband and MIL were furious, accusing me of “airing dirty laundry” and making them look bad.

Now they’re avoiding me, and while a small part of me feels guilty, I can’t help but feel justified. They need to understand how deeply they hurt me and that their actions had consequences. Was it petty? Maybe. But after being dismissed and disrespected during such a vulnerable time, I think it’s fair that they face the reality of what they did. My hope is that this forces them to reflect and change, though a part of me wonders if that’s even possible. For now, my focus is on my baby and reclaiming my sense of peace and control.
