I Agreed to Take Pictures of My Cousin’s Wedding for Free, but He Mocked My Job – Karma Didn’t Let It Slide

When my cousin Mark asked me to photograph his wedding for free, I agreed without hesitation. As a professional photographer, I knew how important quality pictures were for such a special day, and I wanted to gift him something meaningful. Despite the long hours and effort it would require, I was happy to contribute to his celebration. However, as the wedding planning unfolded, Mark’s attitude toward my work began to shift in a way I hadn’t expected.

At a family gathering a few weeks before the wedding, Mark made a snide comment about my profession. “It’s just clicking a button, right? I mean, anyone can do it,” he said with a smirk, earning a few awkward chuckles from others. I was stunned and hurt by his disrespect, especially after agreeing to work for free. I tried to brush it off, but his dismissive tone lingered in my mind. If he thought so little of my skills, why did he ask for my help in the first place?

On the wedding day, I arrived early and worked tirelessly, capturing every special moment. Yet Mark’s dismissive behavior continued, with him occasionally making passive-aggressive remarks. I remained professional but decided to let my work do the talking. After delivering the beautifully edited photos a week later, Mark and his wife were thrilled with the results—until I sent them an invoice for the standard rate. “I thought this was free!” Mark protested, to which I calmly replied, “I adjusted my rates since ‘anyone can do it.’”

Though furious at first, Mark eventually paid the invoice after realizing how much effort and expertise went into the photos. The experience taught him a humbling lesson about respecting others’ professions. Meanwhile, I learned the value of standing up for myself and ensuring my work was appreciated. In the end, karma ensured justice was served, and I walked away with my dignity—and a valuable life lesson—intact.
