My Entitled Date Brought Her Own Bell with Her to the Restaurant to Get Server’s Attention

I was looking forward to my dinner date with Sophie, someone I had recently started seeing and thought had real potential. We met at a cozy, upscale restaurant, and everything seemed promising at first. She was dressed elegantly, and her smile lit up the room. But as soon as we sat down, I noticed something odd—she pulled a small silver bell out of her bag and placed it on the table. Confused, I asked what it was for. “Oh, it’s just to get the server’s attention,” she said nonchalantly, as if it were the most normal thing in the world.

Before I could process her response, Sophie rang the bell—loudly. Heads turned, and the room fell awkwardly silent for a moment. A server hurried over, clearly uncomfortable. Sophie didn’t seem to notice the awkwardness and immediately started rattling off drink orders as though she were royalty. I was mortified. I leaned over and whispered, “You really don’t need to do that. They’ll come if you just signal politely.” She waved me off, saying, “This is faster. I hate waiting.”

As the meal went on, Sophie continued to use the bell, ringing it whenever she wanted something—a refill, the dessert menu, or even just to ask for extra napkins. Each time, the servers appeared more strained, but they maintained their professionalism. I couldn’t help but cringe with every ring, feeling secondhand embarrassment for her lack of awareness. I tried to subtly ask her to stop, but she seemed completely oblivious to how disrespectful and entitled her behavior was.

By the end of the evening, I had made up my mind. As we walked out, I apologized to the staff for her actions and left a generous tip to try to make up for the ordeal. Sophie, meanwhile, didn’t seem to grasp why I was so quiet on the drive home. That night, I decided there wouldn’t be a second date. Respect and kindness go a long way, and her blatant disregard for others was a deal breaker I couldn’t overlook.
